How We Work

Steering Committee

The work of the SGA is carried out by a Steering Committee comprised of, global, regional and UN focal points. The Steering Committee is assisted by sub-committees/task forces organized by members, whose work includes: research and analysis; preparing position papers; providing input into global reports to ensure inclusion of ageing issues; communications and outreach; advocacy.

Outreach

The SGA works closely with the United Nations Focal Point on Ageing within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Division for Sustainable Development (DSD), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN Women, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organisation among others.

Partnerships

The SGA is a member of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders HLPF (High Level Political Forum) Coordination Mechanism, which meets on a regular basis to ensure broad, open, transparent, and inclusive participation in the High Level Political Forum. Additionally, the SGA has frequently joined with individual Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (such as Children and Youth, Women, Persons with Disabilities) in drafting formal statements to the HLPF Interactive Dialogues, partnering together for side events, and writing joint position statements, among other forms of collective advocacy.

Reporting

The SGA, on behalf of its members, reports to the High Level Political Forum each year and participates in discussions of the HLPF. At the national level, members of the SGA contribute to voluntary national reviews that are submitted by governments to the HLPF. SGA members also participate in other intergovernmental bodies such as the Commission on the Status of Women, the Statistical Commission, the Commission on Population and Development, and the Commission for Social Development, in addition to participating in meetings of the General Assembly, and other relevant intergovernmental bodies, through written and oral statements.
